Sculptural Adornment
Bobisuthi’s stunning mental work stems from the ancient tradition of ornament as expression of higher self. Each piece, hand fabricated from raw metal and powerful stones, is a unique gesture. Cultures rise and fall but their sacred adornments outlast the gods they were made to venerate. Bobisuthi honors the impulse to adorn and invites her audience to participate in these transformative wearable sculptures.

A special showing of Holly Bobisuthi’s sculptural headdresses and mirrors will be held during this one time event!

Christmas Revels 2018: Ancient Mysteries of Andalusian Spain

40276250_1642602782506070_2582782032308338688_n.jpg

Our Revels story begins in 1600 in that part of Spain called Andalusia. Three individuals, a young Moorish woman, a Sephardic Jew and an elderly Castilian happen to meet, each armed with a mysterious clue that is guiding them on a quest. They are all hoping to find their way back through time to the era of La Convivencia , a time when, as they understand it, all three cultures, Muslim, Jewish and Christian, lived in a spirit of tolerance and peace.

Directed to pay attention to the celestial bodies, and swept up in the Revels celebration of the Solstice, they learn how each culture celebrates the Sun, the Moon and the stars in song dance, poetry and story. By looking to the heavens, they learn the secret of finding the Convivencia. They come to realize that despite the things that make each of us different and unique, in the end, we all live under the same sky.

December 8th through 16th, 2018 at the Scottish Rite Theater in Oakland, CA.

Friday 8:00 pm.
Saturday 1:00 and 5:00 pm.

23rd Dia de los Muertos Festival in Fruitvale

43025504_1850963314958653_5622735884139888640_o.jpg

ABOUT THE DIA DE LOS MUERTOS FESTIVAL
The Unity Council Día de Los Muertos Annual Festival is a free, outdoor festival that brings over 80,000 people to the vibrant, culturally-rich Fruitvale neighborhood to enjoy world-class live music, family-friendly games, rides and activities, traditional Latin American artisans, and the stunning altar artistic installations created by community members paying homage to los Muertos. Families across California join us to experience live music, Ballet Folklorico, Aztec dancers and to shop at the local artisan craft stands. The Día de los Muertos Festival was inducted into the U.S. Library of Congress by Congresswoman Barbara Lee as a “Local Legacy.”

The 23rd Annual Dia de los Muertos Festival will take place on Sunday, November 4th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

2018 Festival Theme: “A Dream for All”
While the festival has deep ancestral roots, the current political climate begs the question of how we can use this platform to educate, inundate, and celebrate. In keeping with that line of thinking, The Unity Council and A2Z are proposing that the Fruitvale Dia De Los Muertos Festival, in 2018, adopt a theme that highlights the current plight of all Dreamers and Immigrants, while also serving to elevate the festival to the national stage.
