GIFTS FOR GROUPS
Oakland Art Murmur (OAM) offers genuinely unique art experiences as gifts for groups of families, friends, and corporate teams. This nonprofit’s mission is to strengthen Oakland’s diverse visual arts communities by providing the public access to art, resources, programming, and experiences. Throughout Oakland, you’ll find many venues for artists to use to display their work, including more than a few incredible outdoor murals.
Guided by one of Oakland’s top muralists.
Includes a one year Oakland Art Murmur membership to the person making the purchase.
Costs $1000 for group of 15-20, additional $10 per person for material costs.
Larger groups can be accommodated for an additional fee, based on group size.
CURATED ART OR MURAL TOUR
$500 for group of 15-20.
2 hour, multi-venue / mural tour tailored to the size and interest of your group. May include a reception with the featured artists.
Private wine, beer, or spirits tasting at a local venue for an additional fee.

Art Classes Make Lasting Gifts
Oakland is full of DIY classes, from cooking to sewing, beer to robot making, and glass blowing to origami. Whatever your fancy, there is a fun way to learn a new craft. Below are our picks offered from a wide range of arts and crafts workshops available — check out the host’s link to learn about all of the creative classes each offers or to inquire about gift certificates.
Metalwork Jewelry Made Easy
Learn how to make your own metalwork jewelry using basic techniques with tools that are easy and affordable to come by. You’ll learn the basics of manipulating brass or copper wire into a variety of different shapes, from geometric to more organic. Then use these shapes to create our own earrings, necklaces, and even bracelets. We’ll also go over everything you need to create your own at-home metal work shop.
Clay Building Workshop
Instructor Jeannie Hesse will lead you through basic sculpting clay techniques and tricks of the trade. This class is great for beginners or advanced. You'll never be rushed and you will leave with a finished piece you can feel proud of. All inclusive: sculpting clay, extra glass beads and stones, sculpting tools, screws for install, aprons, and table coverings are provided.
Stationery/Block Printing Class
Learn the ancient art of block printing to create your own custom linoleum-cut stamps to use on personalized stationery or create your own edition of small block-prints in this two and a half-hour class. All supplies are included, and you'll leave with either 10 stamped personalized cards (with envelopes) or an edition of 6 block prints on printmaking paper, as well as your custom block.
Soy Candle Making
Create your own clean burning, scented soy candles. Blend your own scents using fragrance and essential oils. Rare Bird will provide a wide variety of fragrances including florals, herbs, musks, smoky, and leather scents, soothing essential oils and more. All the materials are provided. Everyone will go home with three handmade 4-ounce soy candles which will burn about 20 hours each.
Beginner Sewing Class
Whether you are a total beginner or a self-taught hobbyist, Sew Images Beginner Sewing Class is for you. They will teach you everything you need to know to start sewing like a professional—whether you are starting from scratch or just need a few more pointers. Give all of your projects a solid foundation with this technically focused, comprehensive class.
3D Printer 101
Hang out with the 3D printing crowd at Ace Monster Toys. They have a low-key gathering every two weeks. Everyone from newcomer to expert is welcome. It takes about 30 minutes, then you may leave after the training if you don't want to hang out. The remainder of the meeting is unstructured. They tend to do whatever projects the attendees feel like doing.
Learn how to use power tools, as well as traditional and modern hand tools, safely and effectively. Class assignments introduce basic concepts and techniques, to give you the skills needed for many woodworking projects, such as mill board flattening and straightening, creating strong joints for connecting wood, and gluing boards together to make a panel. All tools for learning are provided.
Taro’s Origami Studio has taken all the folds needed in origami and categorized them by difficulty so that they are easy to follow and fun to learn. Like martial arts, their Kyu System relies on progression through practice, repetition, and demonstration. By displaying mastery of a specific set of techniques, students will receive colored bands as they “graduate” to new levels, in the same manner that students are rewarded with belts in karate.
Copper Stamped Earrings
Using simple designs, metal stamps, and shears to create your own unique earrings with copper. Learn how cut out shapes, file them, and stamp a design to finish a beautiful pair of copper earrings. Depending on time and design, you may end up with two pairs. This is a great beginner class. Tools provided and also for sale; materials included.
Introduction to Glass Mosaics
In this weekend beginner class, students will design and create a 12” X 12”, indoor mosaic using richly colored stained glass and glass tile. We will cover all the steps of mosaic creation, from preparing the substrate, design, tool use, setting and grouting. Use your own design, or, choose from a selection of prepared designs for your piece. Use of tools, substrates and all glass materials are included. No art or mosaic experience necessary.
Have you ever wanted to knit your very own cozy scarf, hat, or mittens? This quick and painless class will give you a taste of what knitting is all about. Spend the afternoon with us, sipping tea, and make your first pair of fingerless mitts.
About the yarn used in this class: Puffin is a plump, chunky, single-ply yarn spun from sturdy American wool fleece. Its felted texture knits up into garments with a soft halo and a broken-in feel. Puffin is great for quick accessories or cozy, wear-all-the-time sweaters.
Old Master Drawing & Painting Technical Foundation Class
This is an ongoing course and begins with drawing exercises to develop the understanding and skills necessary to use value (tone) for realistic rendering. Visual memory comparison measurements are used. Students explore Old Master techniques for creating depth, distance, atmosphere, solid form, and convincing surface textures on a two-dimensional surface. Subjects range through cast studies, self portraits, and still lifes.
Whether its your first figure drawing session or you're a regular, all levels of experience are welcome. The $20 participation fee includes 20 sheets of newsprint and lessons. ArtVale Gallery is a community art practice and exhibition space dedicated to providing opportunities for creative expression and artistic appreciation.
They offer a variety of classes that are suitable for beginners to advanced fiber artists. Class materials are sold separately. Sign up in advance! Some classes fill up early. They are a brick-and-mortar yarn shop that supplies materials for crocheting, knitting, felting, and spinning projects. Their staff has over 100 years of combined experience in textile arts.
Beginning Glass Blowing
This class is ideal for those who are interested in learning about the glassblowing process and thrive in a learning environment that emphasizes hands-on, learn-by-doing teaching style. Student artists create their own glass art work of a clear solid snowman, a colorful solid paperweight, and a clear blown drinking glass.
Introduction to the Wheel
During this course you'll learn the ceramic process from start to finish. Your instructor will teach you how to throw on the wheel, basic trimming techniques, and glaze application. This course is great for beginners with no experience. Course includes: clay, firing, tools, materials, glazes, and open studio hours.
