Opened in 1883 by Johnny Heinold as J.M. Heinold's Saloon, this Historic Landmark looked much then as she does today. She was built right here in 1880 from the timbers of an old whaling ship over the water in a dock area that even then was at the foot of Webster Street.
It is for good reason that this is known as Jack London's Rendezvous. As a schoolboy, Jack London studied at these same tables we still use today. Later, he would return to his favorite table and write notes for The Sea Wolf and Call of the Wild.
ack London is not the only spirit that keeps us company in these walls. Oakland mayor John L. Davie brought President William Howard Taft in for relaxation and refreshments. Robert Louis Stevenson spent time here while waiting for his ship to be outfitted for his final cruise to Samoa. Other notables to sit at this bar include Joaquin Miller, Robert Service, Charles E. Markham, Earle Gardner, Erskine Caldwell, Ambrose Bierce, and Rex Beach. Take a good look at the numerous momentos and soak in the history.
Finally, the big question: "What about the tilting floor? When the great San Francisco earthquake struck in 1906, the pilings underneath the saloon settled in the mud and subsequent efforts to shore up the floor proved unsuccessful. You can still note the time of the quake from the clock on the wall that stopped for the occasion.
Johnny and George operated the bar for a total of 86 years. The tradition was carried on by George's widow, Margaret, until 1984, when Carol Brookman acquired it with the promise to maintain its appearance as close to original as possible. It is her love for the history and traditions of the saloon that makes it possible for you to partake of a social drink while soaking in a little history.
Oakland’s Little Slice of Paradise. After work, take a vacation from the busy streets of Oakland without the five-hour plane ride! Inside The Kona Club, bamboo walls reflect the warm and cozy hues provided by our genuine blowfish lights, just as the moon reflects off the Pacific. In fact, every surface has something interesting on which to feast your eyes — that is, when they aren’t glued to our life-sized hula girl and her gyrating hips. If it’s a quiet game you seek, our coin-operated pool table is nestled in its own hide-away room.
If you prefer to lounge at the bar, feel free to watch the nights sporting event, your favorite retro Hawaiian movie, or an episode of Magnum PI on one of our three television screens. Weekends at The Kona Club are when the locals really come out and party.
Our eclectic jukebox featuring everything from Martin Denny to Van Halen and Mos Def to Depeche Mode, attracts an equally diverse crowd. Bond with the person next to you over a Pina Colada and an A’s game or sway shoulder to shoulder as you shout out the chorus of “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Our smoke-spewing volcano erupts without warning, just as Kilauea of the Big Island, and covers the bar in a mysterious, warm glow: The perfect backdrop to a great night.

The name "Make Westing" comes from a short story by Oakland native Jack London. While a bit grim and violent, the tale centers on the overwhelming need to make the westing wind back home to Oakland - to a place of warmth and family (and bocce courts?).
Who are we?
Make Westing is located in the thriving Uptown district of Oakland. Wood, iron, and slate make up the décor that resonates with the industrial heritage of our city. We are equipped with a full bar, a variety of gourmet bites, an outdoor patio, and two indoor bocce courts. The Fox theater is less than one block away, and the 19th st. BART stop is across the street.
While we are not bocce aficionados per se, we did play at some of our favorite bars in Brooklyn and the lanes fit the space perfectly, while serving as an entertaining companion to a cocktail. The courts are first come, first serve and are free. When there are others waiting, each group may play one game to seven and then give up the court to the next group in line. If you would like to rent the bocce courts, contact us.
